Modern The Advantage Of Pond Dechlorinator
Now you have filled the pond with new water, you are excited to see clearer view of the pond's bottom and how the fish will love their new environment. As too much excitement, you notice that the fish are gasping slowly at the surface, wondering what could have triggered the fish with such behaviour. After few minutes the fish look as if they are going to die.
If that's the case, then you must have forgotten to add pond dechlorinator in the water. Don't feel bad, you are not alone.
Chlorine is not good for fish. Fish quickly absorb chlorine that can burn their gills and kill them quickly. Fortunately, there is pond dechlorinator that do the work for us.
What is a dechlorinator?
Dechlorinator is also called as chlorine neutralizer or dechlorinator. It removes chlorine and chloramines from tap water or source water that may affect fish and other marine animals.
Why Is Dechlorinator Important?
Most water source contains elements that are unnecessary to fish. Water coming from household and those from farm and ranches should be treated before it gets contact with fish. Although the chemicals present from the water supply is not very harmful to land animals, they can affect fish and damage the biological filters. If too much chlorine contaminates the water, this can trigger the buildup of ammonia, which is more toxic than chlorine. You must use the dechlorinator properly to remove chlorine and save your fish from sudden death.
Usage
Dechlorinators have different dosage recommendations. You must read the instructions carefully to know the required dosage for your dechlorinator. Most of good dechlorinators use one drop for each two gallons of water and two drops for each gallon of water.
Keep in mind that you will dechlorinate the new water not the entire water that has been there already, unless you have removed all the water from the pond for some reason. Dechlorinators show results in as fast as two to five minutes. Always check and follow the instructions to make sure the effectiveness of the product.
Are there any negative effects of dechlorinator?
Dechlorinators are formulated to treat chlorine/chloramine, and they cannot remove other chemicals or additives from the water. Therefore, dont expect your dechlorinator to clear algae or remove ammonia.
All dechlorinators remove chlorine, but only few neutralize chloramine. If your source water contains more chloramine, use a dechlorinator that eliminates not just chlorine but chloramine as well. You can buy both at the local pet shop or garden centre.
Chlorine is quicker to treat than chloramine. You can just let chlorine stand overnight and allow it to evaporate and then it will be safe to use on the next day. You can also bubble the air out through air stone to hasten the removal of chlorine. However, chloramine is much harder to remove. You must buy dechlorinator that neutralized chloramine.
